Noah Wyle is an American actor, producer, director, and writer best known for playing Dr. John Carter on ER and Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch on The Pitt.
Born Noah Strausser Speer Wyle on June 4, 1971, in Hollywood, California, he is the son of Stephen Wyle, an electrical engineer, and Marjorie Speer, a nurse. His father’s family is Jewish, with roots in Russia and Ukraine, while his mother is Episcopalian. He grew up with exposure to both traditions, particularly through holidays, but without a strongly religious upbringing.
Wyle attended the Thacher School in Ojai, California, and pursued acting professionally after graduating in 1989. His early films included Crooked Hearts (1991), A Few Good Men (1992), and Swing Kids (1993). His breakthrough came in 1994 when he joined the original cast of NBC’s ER. As Carter, who progressed from medical student to experienced physician, Wyle became one of the show’s central performers. He remained a regular through 2005 and subsequently returned for guest appearances. The role earned him five consecutive Emmy nominations for supporting actor in a drama series, from 1995 to 1999.
His other prominent roles included Steve Jobs in Pirates of Silicon Valley (1999), Flynn Carsen in The Librarian television films and The Librarians series, and Tom Mason in Falling Skies (2011-2015). He also appeared in Donnie Darko (2001), The Red Line (2019), and Leverage: Redemption. Alongside his screen career, he served for many years as artistic producer of Los Angeles’ Blank Theatre Company and supported healthcare and humanitarian causes.
In 2025, Wyle returned to medical drama with The Pitt, reuniting with former ER collaborators John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill. Set in a Pittsburgh emergency department, the series follows a hospital shift hour by hour. Wyle stars as the senior emergency physician and also works as an executive producer, writer, and director.
The role brought his Jewish heritage into his work in a new way. Wyle and Wells drew on his family history to develop Robby, whose surname honors an ancestral family name. Wyle suggested a scene in which the overwhelmed physician recites the Shema during a mass-casualty crisis. He also wrote a second-season episode featuring a patient affected by the 2018 Tree of Life synagogue massacre, highlighting the support Pittsburgh’s Muslim community offered its Jewish neighbors.
In an April 2026 interview, Wyle said the character’s Jewish identity had gained greater significance after the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. He also described studying with an Israeli rabbi in his twenties and a renewed personal connection to Judaism through his youngest daughter, Frances, whose bat mitzvah had been arranged. She helped him pronounce the Shema for the show. Reflecting on her influence and his work, he said, “Judaism now has more relevance to my life than ever before.”
Wyle won his first acting Emmy in 2025 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for The Pitt and shared its Outstanding Drama Series award as an executive producer. On September 14, 2026, he won the lead-actor award for the second consecutive year, while The Pitt again won Outstanding Drama Series. His other honors include a 2026 Golden Globe for his performance in the series and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, dedicated on April 9, 2026.
Wyle married actress Sara Wells in 2014. They have a daughter, Frances. He also has two children, Owen and Auden, from his previous marriage to makeup artist Tracy Warbin.
