CIA Report on Situation in the Mediterranean and the Near East

(October 17, 1947)

This CIA report provides an overview of U.S. interests in the region country by country. It starts with the assertion that access to Persian Gulf oil and the denial of control of the Mediterranean to a hostile power are essential to the security of the United States. The Soviet Union is viewed as the major threat to U.S. security. Only one paragraph relates to Arab opposition to partition and the concern that U.S. support might lead the Arab states to take steps that would adversely affect American interests.
