On July 19, 1949, Israel’s cabinet decided to encourage families to have more children by granting 100 lirot to any family with 10 living children. Initially, the expectation was that about 100 families would be eligible. This did not include Israeli Arabs, who could also apply, but the government had no idea how many might qualify for the grants. The policy remained in place until the enactment of Israel's social security child support policy in 1959.
