At this summit meeting, among other things, President Bush and President Gorbachev discussed the Middle East and Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union. Gorbachev agreed that Yasser Arafat should condemn terrorist attacks against Israel. Bush stressed his desire to see direct flights from the Soviet Union to Israel. Gorbachev complained the Arab states were criticizing him for allowing the Jews to leave for Israel; nevertheless, he gave no indicaiton he would change his policy. He also criticized Israeli settlements and asked Bush to do more to convince Israel to stop new construction.
