Edwin Einstein
(1842 - 1905)
EINSTEIN, Edwin, a Representative from New York; born
in Cincinnati, Ohio, November 18, 1842; moved with his parents to New
York City in 1846; worked as clerk in a store; received a collegiate
training in the College of the City of New York, and entered Union College,
but did not graduate; engaged in mercantile pursuits; elected as a Republican
to the Forty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1879-March 3, 1881); was not a
candidate for renomination in 1880; unsuccessful Republican candidate
for mayor of New York City in 1892; dock commissioner of New York City
in 1895; was prominently identified with a number of investment companies
and woolen factories; died in New York City January 24, 1905; interment
in Shearith Israel Cemetery, Brooklyn, N.Y.
