Lydia Joel
(1914 - 1992)
Born and educated in New York City, Joel dedicated her
life to dance. She began as a teacher, led her own dance group, and
in 1952 became editor-in-chief of Dance Magazine. Under her
leadership, the magazine broadened its scope to cover international dance
style and festivals. In 1973, she became head of the dance program at
The School of Performing Arts, remaining active in dance circles even after
her retirement in 1984. She had two children with her second husband,
Edwin Miller.
