Emma B. Mandl
(1842 - 1928)
Born in Bohemia, Mandl emigrated to the United States
with her family at age fifteen. She spent 40 years working for
philanthropic organizations in Chicago, organizations mainly geared toward
helping the Eastern European Jewish immigrants. She co-founded the Baron Hirsch Woman's Club, the Home
for Jewish Orphans, and the Home for Jewish Friendless and Working
Girls. Her tireless efforts on behalf of working women and for the
poor during the outbreaks of tuberculosis earned her honors from the
Chicago Jewish community. She had two children.
