Oscar Pulvermacher

PULVERMACHER, OSCAR (1883–1958), British editor. Pulvermacher's father came to England from East Prussia. Oscar Pulvermacher was born in London and started work with the London Daily Mail at the age of 17, rising to be editor in 1929. Pulvermacher apparently remained editor for only one year, although he continued to be employed by the Daily Mail in a period when the paper achieved what was then the highest circulation in the world. In 1933 he disagreed with the sympathetic policy toward Hitler of the paper's owner Lord Rothermere and resigned. A month later he was engaged by the Daily Telegraph to reorganize its news services and during World War II was its northern editor in Manchester.
