Stefan Wladislaw

Stefan Wladislaw was a member of Betar. He transferred pistols and grenades through the sewage pipes [of the Warsaw Ghetto] to his friends in the underground. In the summer of 1942, on his way back from the Aryan side with weapons, he found three Gestapo agents waiting for him at the entrance to the pipe. Stefan drew his gun, killed one, and injured a second. The third German escaped and called for help. A German unit arrived and shot Wladislaw dead. Inscribed on his grave is: “Here lies Stefan Wladislaw, a soldier of the Jewish Military Organization who died in battle against the enemy.”
