On October 7th, 2023, Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist militant group that governs the Gaza
Strip, invaded Israel, killing 1,200 Israelis and abducting 250 hostages. The day after Hamas’s attack, Hezbollah, an Islamist militant group in Lebanon, began attacking Israel in the North, forcing 60,000 Israelis to flee their homes, and killing dozens. Both Hamas and Hezbollah are funded by Iran, who has fired ballistic missiles at Israel twice since the fighting began. In response to these attacks, Israel retaliated by launching military campaigns in Gaza against Hamas, and in Lebanon against Hezbollah.

Based on this information, was Israel’s military campaign in Gaza a justified response to
Hamas attacking Israel on October 7th, 2023, or was it not justified? (Schoen Cooperman Research, February 2025)
