Excerpts from the Report of the Surrender of Gen. Dittmar

(April 28, 1945)

Lt. Gen. Kurt Dittmar (1891-1959) became General for Special Employment in April 1942 and subsequently the German army’s official news commentator. On April 25, 1945, Dittmar surrendered to U.S. forces in Magdeburg. In a revealing interview with U.S. interrogators, Dittmar admits the German army was aware the war was lost and explains some of the reasons for its defeat. He also talks about the July plot to assassinate Hitler and Hitler’s micromanagement of the war effort.
