Intrinsic Defender U.S.-Israel Naval Exercise 2025

(December 7–11, 2025)

Intrinsic Defender was a bilateral naval exercise conducted by the United States and Israel, designed to strengthen operational cooperation, readiness, and strategic alliance in maritime security. The 2025 iteration of the exercise took place in Israel from December 7–11, involving both U.S. and Israeli naval forces.

The exercise focused on several critical maritime operations, including:

  • Visit, board, search, and seizure procedures
  • Diving operations
  • Building a comprehensive maritime aerial picture
  • Medical training and academic sessions

According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the exercise was intended to "strengthen and maintain the long-standing cooperation between the two navies.”

U.S. officials highlighted the strategic value of Intrinsic Defender. Captain Brian Reitter, commander of Task Force 56, stated: “The importance of this bilateral exercise for both our forces cannot be overstated. Such training enhances the ability to operate seamlessly and respond to a variety of threats and contingencies in these strategically important waters.”

The exercise underscored what the IDF described as the “strategic alliance” between Israel and U.S. Central Command, supporting regional maritime security and stability.

Intrinsic Defender is part of ongoing efforts to support freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. The exercise enhances interoperability and strengthens relationships between the U.S. and Israeli navies.
