The First Published Jewish
Sermon
This, the first American Jewish sermon to
be published, was preached at Newport's synagogue
by an emissary from the Holy Land, Haim Isaac
Karigal. The sermon was delivered on May
28, 1773, to celebrate Shavu'ot,
one of the three Jewish pilgrimage festivals.
The sermon, which was preached in Spanish
interspersed with Hebrew, was translated
into English by Abraham Lopez.
