Researchers with the Israeli Antiquities Authority discovered the remnants of an ancient Roman theater in the Western Wall complex while excavating tunnels underneath Wilson's Arch in October 2017. The 200-seat structure dates to the Roman period and was discovered as archaeologists were attempting to pinpoint the age of the Arch. Buried under 26-feet of earth, the theater stayed in good condition over the approximately 1,700 years it was lost.
