Statement to the Knesset by Prime Minister Ben-Gurion Regarding Egypt's Claim over Gaza

(March 13, 1957)

On 11 March 1957, Egypt declared that it had restored its administration of Gaza and that a Military Governor for the Strip had been appointed. Prime Minister Ben-Gurion reacted to this move in the Knesset on 13 March 1957.

In accordance with the Foreign Minister's declaration in the General Assembly, Israel reserves freedom of action in the event of the Egyptians returning to the Strip, which never belonged to them, and which is of use to them only for the purpose of attack or threats against Israel.

If the time came when action was appropriate and necessary, the Government would not of course give prior notice of its actions.
